  SEARCH TIPS

As described below, use either Quick Search or Enhanced Search to find pictures matching your needs. Or, our Image Research team does the work for you – free of charge – by preparing a special, private lightbox just for your use. For individualized help or training, click here:

QUICK SEARCH: Found in the panel on the right side of “Home” and other pages, Quick Search offers basic yet sophisticated functionality – usually all you need. In the white box, enter keywords, concepts, artist names or image IDs and click the SEARCH button:

Keywords: i.e. Dinosaur, Dinosaur Egg, Night Sky, Volcano, Biology, Paleontology, Antarctica, Space Shuttle

Keyword searches are your fastest path to perfect images. Enter a keyword “search term” such as a field of science, general details, adjectives, specifics or even precise names. If you enter two words, our search engine looks for images tagged with both.

You may use AND, OR, NOT between keywords, as needed
Spaces between keywords are interpreted to mean AND
Enter as many search terms as you wish
If you’re unsure of the spelling, enter just a few adjacent letters
Enter words in singular form, not plural
Enter either lower or upper-case words
ALL IMAGES shows the entire collection

Concepts: i.e. Joy, Serenity, Love, Success, Beauty, Technology, Intelligence, Power, Fear, Teamwork
Concept keywords describe an innermost essence or meaning in a picture. Commonly used to find images for advertising, they range from emotional expressions to the basics of business acumen.

Artist names: If you’re looking for an artist’s entire collection at Science Faction, search by either last name or first and last name. Narrow the search by entering a subject keyword with the artist’s name. For example, “Psihoyos Dinosaur” brings up only dinosaur photos by photographer Louie Psihoyos.

Note: This is not the same as searching for the artist’s portfolio under PORTFOLIOS & TOPICS. A portfolio is a small, representative subset of the artist’s work.

Image IDs: i.e. scf4327-129, fct4399-007. Every Science Faction image has a unique, 11-character ID beginning with 3 letters. Entering all 11 characters will bring up the precise image you’re looking for. Entering only the first 7 characters (i.e. scf4327) brings up other images submitted as a “batch” by an artist, collection or agency. This is a good way to find other images from the same “take”.

ENHANCED SEARCH: Enhanced Search, found by clicking the button at the bottom of Quick Search, provides more options. These enable you to narrow or expand your search results.

Partial or Exact Word Match: The default under Quick Search is PARTIAL Word Match. Use this setting when spelling is uncertain, or to broaden your search results. For example, searching on the letters “tele” will return images with the following keywords: Telescope, Telestacean, Telephone, Telecommunications, Telecommuting, etc. Under EXACT Word Match, the results are narrowed significantly, and search box entries are assumed to be complete words. For example, searching on “tele” returns NO results; you must type “telescope” to get any telescopes all. In this case, you’ll get ONLY telescope results, and will be spared viewing images with the keywords: Telestacean, Telephone, Telecommunications, Telecommuting.

Note: Always search in singular, not plural, even when you’re looking for groups. For example, the word telescopes returns no images, but telescope brings many images of both individual and batches of telescopes.

No Release Required or Release Required: The default under Quick Search is NO Release Required. Please consult your lawyer to determine whether your planned image use requires a model or property release. In general, you will select No Release Required when your usage is considered “editorial”, such as the factual illustration of a news or topical story in a publicly available newspaper, magazine or book. Commercial uses require model and property releases when people and places are identifiable. In such cases you’ll select Release Required. Generally, commercial uses include advertising, marketing, promotion, packaging (including magazine covers) and use of the image in or on a product for sale (calendars, posters, mugs, cards, for example). Selecting Release Required limits your search to images that either HAVE releases, or that DON’T REQUIRE releases, such as pictures of clouds in the sky.

Note: Science Faction Images maintains digital copies of image releases. Since the standard legal wording in releases has changed over time, your client might have questions about what uses a particular release actually allows. In such a case, we can provide you with digital copies. To protect the privacy of models and property owners, personal names and contact details must always be redacted from copies of releases.

Note: It is sometimes possible for us to obtain releases for non-released images, especially when specifics about your proposed use can be disclosed to models and property owners. Contact if you would like us to pursue releases on your behalf.

Note: We also offer special Rights Clearance services. Should you require special rights, such as celebrity advertising endorsements, we can usually negotiate and attempt to secure those rights on your behalf. Contact

Note: In some cases, our team of digital imaging experts has modified the appearance of models and/or locations to make them unidentifiable. In such cases, releases are usually not required, and “Not Applicable” is noted under “Releases” in the image’s record, viewable by clicking on any thumbnail in search results. Digital modifications are normally disclosed in the Captions or Notes that accompany the image record.

Exclusivity NOT Required or Exclusivity Required: The default under Quick Search is Exclusivity NOT Required. Use this option when you’re NOT worried about other companies using the same image at the same time. Non-exclusive licenses are considerably less expensive and often broader in scope than exclusive licenses.

Exclusivity Required is selectable within Enhanced Search, from the drop box. Your search will only return images that are probably available for exclusive usage. This option is almost always used by advertising agencies for large ad campaigns, packaging or branding purposes.

Exclusivity requires payment of an extra fee, which must be quoted directly by our sales staff (it’s not an automated process, like non-exclusive pricing). Our staff must also confirm the availability of your required rights and then block other similar uses when your purchase is complete.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Exclusivity cannot be purchased until rights availability is checked for you. The checking process is usually a quick one, but sometimes takes two business days, or more. Please allow extra time when exclusive rights are required.

Only an exclusive license takes the image “off the market” for a period of time, enabling you to display the image in your industry and territory without concern that it will show up simultaneously in your competitor’s advertising or marketing. All “Royalty Free” images are non-exclusive; only “Rights Managed” images (including most of Science Faction’s collection) can be licensed exclusively.

Typically, exclusivity is particular to an industry, i.e. automotive parts, or a region, i.e. Northeast United States. Payment of additional fees for exclusivity effectively guarantees the image will not be licensed for a similar usage. Contact

PORTFOLIOS: A portfolio is a small, representative subset of an artist’s work or other collection of images. Our portfolios showcase individual photographers at a quick glance. If you’re interested in seeing more of a photographer’s work, type their name into the regular search box and select “Search”. Most of our photographers are available for assignment work. Contact

TOPICS & STORIES: We are constantly adding to this section. Our drop down list of Topics and Stories showcases pictures that tell stories or illustrate scientific / technological themes. Some image sets include the work of one photographer; others include the work of many. Use keywords in the regular search box to find more images of the same genre.
